How to buy XRP on Kraken and send it to your own wallet
Preparation
What you need before the first XRP purchase
Plan for about 30 minutes once your account is verified, plus the hold before XRP bought with new money can leave Kraken.
Holds: 72 hours after an ACH or card purchase.
- You are 18 or older and live in a US state other than New York and Maine.
- A verified Kraken account located in the United States.
- A bank account in your own name for Plaid ACH, or a debit card.
- An XRP Ledger wallet you control, with its address copied, or an exchange account with its address and destination tag.
- At least 12.05 XRP to send, and at least 1 XRP of it for a new wallet’s reserve.
- Step 1 of 6
Step 1: Verify your account
Identity and address in the Kraken app.
Sign up in the Kraken app and complete verification with your identity and address. Plaid ACH works once the account is verified, located in the United States and linked to a bank account in the same name.2 sourcesKraken US quick startOriginalKraken Plaid ACHOriginal

Step 2: Add money by ACH or debit card
ACH is free; a card costs $0.25 plus 3.75%.
Link your bank through Plaid for free ACH, or pay by debit card. Crypto bought with ACH or card money is held from withdrawal for 72 hours; an ACH deposit itself is held from withdrawal for 7 days.SourceKraken cash depositsOriginal

Step 3: Buy XRP
Instant buy in the app, or an order on Kraken Pro.
In the Kraken app, open Trade, choose Buy and XRP, enter the amount, pick the payment method and review the order: an instant buy costs 1% plus the spread in the price. On Kraken Pro you pay 0.40% maker or 0.80% taker at the entry tier instead.3 sourcesKraken fee scheduleOriginalKraken crypto withdrawal feesOriginalKraken app: buy cryptoOriginal

Step 4: Add your wallet as a withdrawal address
Label, pasted address, confirmation email.
Open Transfer, then Withdraw, choose XRP and add a new withdrawal address with a unique label. Paste the address instead of typing it, then confirm it with the link Kraken emails you; the link is valid for one hour. A new XRP Ledger account becomes active with its first 1 XRP, which the ledger keeps as the reserve.2 sourcesKraken withdrawal addressesOriginalXRPL reservesOriginal

Step 5: Send XRP
Choose the saved address, check fee and amount, confirm.
Withdraw XRP to the saved address and check the amount: at least 12.05 XRP, of which 0.05 XRP is the fee. A wallet of your own usually needs no destination tag; when the receiving account is an exchange that gives you one, make sure the withdrawal form carries it before you confirm.2 sourcesKraken crypto withdrawal feesOriginalKraken crypto withdrawalsOriginal

Step 6: Check the arrival and keep the records
Transaction ID, cost basis, Form 1099-DA.
Look up the transaction on an XRP Ledger explorer with the ID from Kraken, and keep the purchase record with date, USD amount and fees. Kraken issues Form 1099-DA for tax year 2025; a transfer to your own wallet is not a sale, and your records keep the cost basis.SourceKraken tax formsOriginal
After setup
Keep checking these items
Keep the account, withdrawal and record checks current so you can locate the relevant information later.
Keep the reserve in mind
Your wallet always holds 1 XRP plus 0.2 XRP for each trust line or offer you add. Only the rest can be sent on.
Save your tax records
Export your Kraken ledger once a year and keep it with the Form 1099-DA, so the cost basis of XRP held in your own wallet stays documented.
