The interface is only one part of the system
A DeFi transaction can depend on a smart contract, a price feed, administrative keys, and a bridge. A polished website does not tell you how these parts are controlled or what happens if one fails.
Separate accidental losses from economic losses. A correctly functioning protocol can still expose you to liquidation, changing collateral values, low liquidity, or an asset losing its peg. Understanding the code risk does not remove the market risk.
A token approval can outlast the trade
An allowance may authorize a contract to transfer a token from your address later. It is not necessarily limited to the swap visible on the page. The spender, token, amount, and network matter; avoid unlimited allowances when a smaller one meets your task.
Disconnecting a website in your wallet does not automatically revoke an onchain allowance. Permission signatures, NFT operator approvals, and ordinary token allowances can have different behavior. Inspect the request rather than assuming all signatures are equivalent.
Review and revoke permissions
Reach an allowance-management tool through a verified address. Confirm that it supports the network you used and inspect which contract received permission. Revocation normally requires a transaction and a network fee.
- Start with unfamiliar spenders and permissions for applications you no longer use.
- Check allowances for each relevant network and account, not only the first wallet shown.
- Reduce or revoke a permission after the task when continuing access is unnecessary.
- Confirm the transaction actually changes the intended allowance before signing.
- Remember that revoking an allowance does not repair an exposed private key or recovery phrase.
Read what the audit actually covered
Look for the audited contract version, scope, date, findings, and whether serious issues were resolved. If the deployed contract changed after the report, the earlier audit may not cover the system you are using. An audit is evidence of a review, not insurance or a promise that exploits are impossible.
Check who can upgrade contracts, change important parameters, or pause withdrawals. Consider timelocks, administrative access, public incident history, documentation, and the availability of an exit. Large deposits and a long history are useful context but do not prove safety.
Keep experimental activity away from the main wallet
Use a separate address with a deliberately limited balance for new applications. Transfer only what the task requires and account for network fees. Do not connect the address holding your long-term assets merely to claim a small reward.
A hardware wallet adds a signing check, but you still need to understand the action. Transaction simulation can provide additional context; it cannot guarantee a future outcome or reveal every malicious design.
A cheaper network is not automatically a safer investment
A bridge may introduce separate custody, validation, upgrade, and withdrawal assumptions. A layer 2 also has its own operating and exit mechanisms. Know which asset you will receive and how to move it back before transferring funds.
High quoted yields need an explanation: trading fees, borrower interest, token subsidies, or some other source. Check how the rate can change and whether withdrawing carries restrictions. Do not treat a large annualized number as a substitute for understanding the strategy.
If you approved something suspicious
Stop interacting with the site and preserve the transaction or signature details. Inspect relevant permissions through verified tools and revoke them if possible. If a recovery phrase or key was exposed, move surviving assets to a freshly generated wallet through a trusted workflow.
Do not repeatedly send gas into an account that appears to be drained immediately. An automated attacker may be watching it. Seek help through established official channels, and never give the helper signing keys or your backup.
