Track an XRP transaction: why is my XRP not arriving?

An XRP payment is final on the ledger within three to five seconds. When XRP goes missing, the network is almost never the cause; it is the exchange, the destination tag or the reserve. With the hash of the payment you can tell which of the three in about a minute.

Check a transaction now

Paste the hash of your payment. You get status, time, amount, destination tag and the result code in plain English, plus the next step.

The hash goes to our server and public XRPL nodes for this one lookup only. We do not store it.

Before you start

Where to find the hash of your payment

Every payment on the XRP Ledger has a unique ID of 64 characters. Depending on the app it is called hash, transaction ID or TxID. Without it a payment cannot be found reliably.

  • At the exchange

Open the XRP withdrawal in your transaction history. The details show the transaction ID, often with a link to an explorer. If there is none yet, the exchange is still processing the withdrawal and it has not reached the ledger.

  • In your own wallet

In Ledger Wallet, Trezor Suite, Tangem or Xaman, tap the payment in the history. The detail view shows the hash or a button that opens it in an explorer.

  • From the sender

Waiting for a payment from someone else? Ask for the hash. An address alone is not enough, because thousands of payments land on an exchange address every day.

In the explorer

Read the payment in the explorer

The check field above reads the same data an explorer shows. If you want to look yourself, use the official explorer of the XRP Ledger Foundation. Three places on the page tell you what you need.

  1. Step 2 of 3

Step 2: Read the status next to the type

Success means it went through; Fail with a code means it was rejected.

The status sits next to "Payment". "Success" means the XRP arrived on the destination address. "Fail" with a code such as tecDST_TAG_NEEDED means the ledger rejected the payment and only the fee was spent. The table below explains each code.

  2. Step 3 of 3

Step 3: Compare the destination address and tag

Address and the number after the colon must match the exchange.

Under "Destination" you see the address and, after a colon, the destination tag. Compare both with the deposit page of your exchange. If the address matches but the tag is missing or different, the exchange cannot match the payment to your account.

Look it up

What the result codes mean

Every payment in the ledger carries a result code. Only tesSUCCESS means it went through. Codes starting with tec mean the payment is recorded but did not happen; only the fee was spent.

Result codes of an XRP payment and the next step
CodeWhat happenedWhat you do now
tesSUCCESSThe payment went through. The XRP are on the destination address. If an exchange has not credited it, compare the destination tag and contact that exchange with the hash.
tecDST_TAG_NEEDEDThe destination requires a destination tag and the payment had none. The ledger rejected it; the XRP never left.Look up the tag at the exchange and send again. If the payment came from an exchange, the XRP are still in its wallet: ask it to credit them back.
tecNO_DST_INSUF_XRPThe destination address was not activated yet and the amount was below the reserve a new account needs. The payment was rejected.Send at least the base reserve; that activates the address.
tecNO_DSTThe destination address does not exist on the ledger. The payment was rejected.Check the address. A new account can only be created with XRP worth at least the reserve.
tecUNFUNDED_PAYMENTThe sending address did not have enough spendable XRP once the reserve was set aside.Send a smaller amount. The reserve stays locked and cannot be sent.
tecPATH_DRYFor a token or a conversion, the ledger found no path with enough liquidity. This does not happen with plain XRP payments. For tokens, check the trust line and the amount.
tecNO_PERMISSIONThe destination does not accept this payment, for example because it only takes preauthorized senders.Ask the recipient whether the address accepts payments from you.

Meanings after the xrpl.org reference. Codes starting with tem, tef or tel never reach the ledger, so an explorer cannot find such a payment.

Decision tree

XRP not arriving: case by case

Go through the questions in order. The first one you answer with no is your cause.

  • 1. Did the exchange actually send it?

Not without a hash in the withdrawal history. The withdrawal is then in the exchange’s review, for example because of a new address, a security hold after a password change, or the travel rule for crypto transfers. Only waiting or the exchange’s support helps.

  • 2. Is the payment on the ledger?

Check the hash in the field above or in the explorer. "Not found" for a complete hash means the payment was refused before it reached the ledger. Ask the sender; the XRP did not leave.

  • 3. Is the code tesSUCCESS?

If not, the code says why the ledger rejected it. The usual cases are a missing tag (tecDST_TAG_NEEDED) and a destination that is not activated (tecNO_DST_INSUF_XRP). In both cases the XRP did not leave.

  • 4. Is the destination address right?

If it differs, the payment went to another address and cannot be pulled back on the ledger. Only the owner of that address can send it back.

  • 5. Is the destination tag right?

If it is missing or wrong, the payment sits in the exchange’s pooled account. Contact the receiving exchange with the hash; how the large US platforms handle it is on our destination tag page.

  • 6. Everything matches and the balance is missing?

Then the exchange is still crediting. Some platforms credit deposits only after their own review. Ask its support with the hash; on the ledger the payment is complete.

Timing and fees

How long an XRP transfer takes

On the ledger itself it is fast and costs almost nothing. The waiting happens before and after, at the platforms.

Where the time goes in an XRP transfer
StageTypical timeWhat it depends on
Withdrawal at the sending platformminutes to hoursthe platform’s review, security holds, batched withdrawals
Confirmation on the XRP Ledger3 to 5 secondsone validated ledger; the fee is usually a fraction of a cent
Credit at the receiving platformseconds to hoursmatching by destination tag, the platform’s own checks

Each platform sets its own timing. The current base fee of the ledger is shown live on our wallet activation page.

Troubleshooting

If it does not work

The cases that most often get stuck with XRP transfers, and what helps in each.

  • The hash is not found

Check that you copied all 64 characters, without a space at either end. If the explorer finds nothing either, the payment never reached the ledger. Ask the sender; nothing left your account.

  • The exchange says completed but shows no hash

Some platforms show the hash only after a while or only in the detail view. If it is still missing after a few hours, ask the platform’s support for the transaction ID.

  • Status Success, balance still missing

Compare destination and tag with the deposit page. If both match, the exchange is still crediting. If the tag does not match, contact the receiving exchange with the hash.

  • Someone offers to recover your XRP

That is a scam. Nobody can reverse a payment on the XRP Ledger. Only the support of the receiving exchange can match it, and real support never asks for a fee up front, your recovery phrase or remote access.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How long does an XRP transaction take?
On the XRP Ledger a payment is final after three to five seconds. What takes longer is the withdrawal at the sending platform and the credit at the receiving one; each platform sets its own timing.
Where do I find the XRP transaction ID?
In the details of the withdrawal at your exchange or in the history of your wallet. It is called hash, TxID or transaction ID and has 64 characters.
Can I track an XRP transaction with only the address?
For your own wallet, yes: the explorer lists every payment of the address. For an exchange address hardly, because many payments arrive there and yours is only recognizable by tag and time. Ask for the hash instead.
What does tecDST_TAG_NEEDED mean?
The destination requires a destination tag and your payment had none. The ledger rejected it and the XRP did not leave. Send again with the correct tag.
What does tecNO_DST_INSUF_XRP mean?
The destination address was not activated and the payment was smaller than the reserve a new account needs. The ledger rejected it. Send at least the base reserve to activate the address.
Can an XRP payment be canceled?
No. A payment that went through is final. Only the recipient can send it back; if the recipient is an exchange, contact its support with the hash.
