Build an inventory without sharing keys
List accounts, public addresses and the person responsible for the estate. Keep wallet recovery material outside the ordinary inventory or any email conversation. An exchange may require its own estate documentation before giving access.
Inherited-property rules can change the basis
Inherited property generally uses fair market value at the decedent’s death, subject to exceptions and possible alternate valuation rules. Preserve the estate valuation and any relevant elections. Gift rules and inheritance rules are different.
A later disposal still needs records
Record the units, established basis and proceeds when the inherited asset is sold. Probate, estate tax, beneficiary treatment and assets held in trusts need fact-specific review.
- Keep executor documentation and the valuation date.
- Record wallet balances and ownership evidence.
- Separate estate transactions from beneficiary transactions.
