Start with every account and wallet
Export the full year and earlier acquisition history still needed for assets sold this year. Include closed exchange accounts, self-custody addresses and DeFi activity. Keep untouched source copies.
Reconcile before choosing tax categories
Match internal transfers so they are not mistaken for new purchases or duplicate sales. Establish opening and closing quantities. Review missing basis, rewards, fees, NFTs and uncertain transactions individually.
Match broker documents and reporting routes
Compare Forms 1099-DA with your reconciled disposal records. Prepare capital and income reporting separately, answer the digital-assets question according to the actual activity and check estimated-payment implications.
- Download raw exports and transaction evidence.
- Check valuation sources and time zones.
- Document each manual adjustment.
- Review the finished return with an appropriate tax professional.
